Carpooling: India Becomes BlaBlaCar’s Largest Market
04/09/2025

By surpassing France and Brazil, India has emerged as BlaBlaCar’s largest global market, showcasing the global reach of a French innovation.
- India becomes BlaBlaCar’s largest carpooling market: in August 2025, the country reached 2 million passengers, a historical record for the platform.
- Nearly 20 million passengers expected in 2025, with peaks of 100,000 per day (+50% vs. 2024).
- A young and connected community: 70% of users are aged 18–34 and 95% of trips are booked via mobile.
Paris, September 4, 2025 – BlaBlaCar, the global leader in shared travel, today announced that in August 2025, India became its largest carpooling market worldwide. The country reached record levels – over 100,000 passengers per day and 20 million expected by the end of 2025 – illustrating the strength of a model built without marketing spend. This historic milestone further cements the first French unicorn’s position as the world leader in carpooling.
India, the first market launched outside Europe, now the global leader
As the 13th country launched by BlaBlaCar – and the first outside Europe – India now accounts for one-third of BlaBlaCar’s global carpooling activity, with 50% growth between 2024 and 2025.
Since its launch in India in 2015, BlaBlaCar has built its community without marketing investment, relying instead on word-of-mouth and user trust.
The company tailored its product to local needs and integrated safety and digital payment features, proving a perfect product–market fit.
Several factors explain this success:
- A young and connected population: 70% of Indian users are aged 18–34, and 95% of trips are booked via mobile, reflecting the massive adoption of digital solutions in the country.
- Rapid urban growth1 and a surge in private car ownership2 have placed transport infrastructure under pressure. Intercity journeys of 30 to 500 km remain particularly poorly served: overbooked trains, insufficient buses, costly solo trips.
As a result, long-distance carpooling has established itself as a practical, affordable, and sustainable solution.
“This is a historic moment for BlaBlaCar. We launched carpooling in France, and in less than 10 years, it has become a mass transport mode in India, now our largest market. This milestone demonstrates the strength of our model: a French innovation that has scaled globally. We are proud to make mobility more accessible, more sustainable, and more community-driven worldwide.”

An international success, proving the strength of BlaBlaCar’s model
Since its creation in France in 2006, BlaBlaCar has had a clear ambition: to democratize shared travel by making it more accessible, affordable, and social.
In the early 2010s, the company expanded across borders, bringing its community- and trust-based carpooling model abroad.
In less than 15 years, BlaBlaCar has launched in 21 countries, building active carpooling communities worldwide.
This expansion highlights the strength and scalability of a unique model built on trust, word-of-mouth, and network effect.
After Europe and Brazil, India’s success confirms BlaBlaCar’s ability to adapt to diverse contexts and establish itself as the world leader in carpooling.
What’s next
This milestone opens a new chapter for BlaBlaCar.
The company is preparing to progressively monetize its priority markets and accelerate its transformation into a multimodal platform. Examples include the integration of train ticket sales in Spain and France (November 2024 and May 2025) and the acquisition of Obilet (November 2024), Turkey’s leading bus ticketing platform.
This momentum confirms the strength of BlaBlaCar’s model and paves the way for further country launches, reinforcing its position as the global leader in shared mobility.
