Environment

2.5 million

tonnes of CO2 avoided

By optimizing the occupancy of buses, cars, and trains, we help reduce travel-related emissions.

Purchasing power

€540 million

saved by drivers

Carpooling allows drivers and passengers to share travel costs and save money.

Connecting people

120 million

carpooler encounters

Sharing a ride means spending part of your journey with people you might never have met otherwise.

Connecting remote areas

2 million

places connected

The strength of carpooling lies in reaching every road and making accessible the areas poorly served by other modes of transport.

Our original ambition, to address the under-optimization of individual mobility, seems more relevant today than ever.

BlaBlaCar has become a digital marketplace for a global transportation network, based on a more rational use of resources and fostering social connections.

A mission that stands out notably because impact is not just an aspect of the model, but truly at the heart of the project. In other words, “Impact by Design.”

Each year, BlaBlaCar publishes a detailed report outlining our main social and environmental contributions.

We continuously enhance the rigor of our measurement and monitoring methodologies to deliver the most accurate and transparent assessment of our impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate the CO2 emissions avoided?

The emissions avoided by our users have been quantitatively tracked since 2018, demonstrating the added value of our services. These emissions are measured across all BlaBlaCar activities.

We calculate these avoided emissions, or “CO2e savings,” following the “Intervention Accounting” approach of the GHG Protocol and in accordance with the methodological recommendations of ADEME.

BlaBlaCar’s greenhouse gas emissions avoided are calculated by comparing the impact of BlaBlaCar journeys against a reference scenario representing the most likely alternative situation (determined based on a survey of a large representative sample of platform users). The methodology notably adopts a full life cycle approach, which includes not only direct and upstream emissions but also those related to the manufacture of mobility equipment and even infrastructure.

What about rebound effects? Are they included in your estimates?

Yes, we strive to be as comprehensive as possible.

The calculation specifically takes into account:
- any detours made by drivers;
- the rebound effects related to cost-sharing;
- potential reductions in mobility if no accessible solution were available;
- speed effects based on the characteristics of the road networks used.

For more details on the methodologies employed, please consult our Sustainability Report below.

What is BlaBlaCar’s carbon footprint?

In 2024, our total carbon footprint amounted to 171,000 tonnes of CO2. Nearly 100% of these emissions fall under Scope 3. Globally, the carbon emissions avoided thanks to the use of the BlaBlaCar platform are 12 times greater than our own carbon footprint. In other words, we help reduce significantly more CO2 than we generate.
